Spread of Buddhism

However, it disappeared in its country of origin, India, due to Islamic conquests in the 11th and 12th centuries. Attempts to make Buddhism accessible to a larger amount of interested people in the 19th century, mostly Theravada, in Central Europe and the USA, failed largely because of the living conditions at the time and the lack of authentic transmission. In Tibet, 99.9% of the Buddhist infrastructure was destroyed in the mid-20th century due to Chinese invasion. Since the 1970s, Buddhism has become increasingly popular, especially in Western countries.
